Unlock Your Potential

Colleagues at Work

Workplace Social Skills

Introduction

Hello! This is a course designed to help you build your  social skills for work. Everyone is a little nervous when they encounter people who they may not know well. For some people, saying "hello" and starting a conversation isn't easy.  For others, it's the simplest thing. However, coming up with things to say after "hello" is still challenging. Either way, you're not alone. Like other skills, you can  build on your social skills  and  make friends  along the way!

In this course, you will...

Learn how to:

--Greet coworkers, supervisors, and customers in a friendly, appropriate way.

--Start and keep up a conversation.

--Solve a problem when an issue with others arises at work.

--Collaborate in work teams.

--Know what your supervisors expect of you and how to meet their expectations.

Aim for specific Learning Objectives:

--Accurately describe the workplace expectations of your present job or one you are seeking and demonstrate a clear understanding of its requirements.

--Exhibit active listening and clear and empathetic communication with co-workers and supervisors so that at least one simulated job task is completed effectively in the time expected.

--Participate productively and inclusively in work teams on one simulated collaborative project.

--Describe how to solve a workplace problem or conflict using learned communication strategies.

--Write an online journal entry or produce an audio or visual summary for each of five sessions, reflecting on topics such as takeaways from class materials, personal accomplishments, progress toward the course goal, or thoughts on areas needing more effort.

Why take this course:

Keeping up good relations with those at your job makes it pleasant to go to work and helps provide work security when you meet your supervisors' expectations.

Treating coworkers in ways you want to be treated also strengthens their connections with you and builds your confidence on the job.
